Men dominate Canadian politics. In the 2021 federal election<\/a>, men represented 57 per cent of candidates for the Liberal party, 67 per cent of Conservative candidates and 70 per cent<\/a> of elected MPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet rarely do we hear about men\u2019s political dominance. Instead, we hear about women\u2019s absence. Women don\u2019t run<\/a>, the pundits say. Women lack confidence<\/a>, doubt their qualifications<\/a> and wait to be asked<\/a>. Women must, as a 2019 House of Commons report<\/a> concluded, be empowered to stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enter the \u201clean in\u201d narrative<\/a> of women\u2019s underrepresentation. To overcome women\u2019s reluctance, dozens of programs and schools across Canada and the globe are training women to run for office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Except \u201clean in\u201d directs attention away from the real culprits \u2014 and it won\u2019t bring about gender parity anytime soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lean-in solution exists because research shows that women have less political ambition than men. Study<\/a> after study<\/a> from the U.S. found that women were consistently less likely than men to consider running for office. In Canada<\/a>, one in three men had thought about running, versus one in five women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women\u2019s lack of political ambition is a deceptively simple fact. On the one hand, this gender gap does exist. On the other hand,\u00a0it blames women<\/a>\u00a0for their own underrepresentation, implying that it\u2019s female character deficiencies in need of fixing.
